From First Duck to Professional Retriever Trainer

Hey, I’m Noah Moody, owner and head trainer of Buck Swamp Kennels & Training, LLC. I was born and raised in Floydale, South Carolina, where life revolved around the outdoors. Whether it was hunting deer with my dad and grandfather, fishing the rivers during the offseason, or spending time on the ball field, I grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, tradition, and the outdoors.

Like many families in South Carolina, we always had Boykin Spaniels around. As I got older, I became fascinated with what these dogs were truly bred to do, which eventually led me to duck hunting. Around the age of 10, I went on my first duck hunt and harvested my first wood duck on the Little Pee Dee River. After chasing that bird down ourselves, I quickly realized how important a good retriever could be for hunting.

Not long after, I got my first Boykin puppy and spent every chance I had learning how to train her through books, videos, and experience in the field. She became a steady hunting companion and sparked a passion that would shape the rest of my life, particularly in the realm of hunting dog training.

That passion grew even stronger after seeing my first truly finished retriever work. While in high school, I purchased my first Labrador Retriever and began learning from a local professional trainer. After graduation, I saved up and bought my first real hunt test prospect, a black female named Rayne from Georgia with an exceptional pedigree. Training Rayne while working alongside a professional trainer helped me develop not only as a handler but also as a trainer. Together, we earned my first HRCH title, and from that moment on, I was fully committed to the retriever world, focusing on producing field-ready retrievers.

What started as training dogs for friends and local hunters eventually grew into something much bigger. After college, I intended to pursue a traditional career while training dogs on the side, but God had different plans. As more dogs came in and more opportunities opened up, Buck Swamp Kennels & Training became a full-time business.

Today, our goal is simple: produce dependable retrievers and well-rounded dogs that owners can enjoy both in the field and at home. Whether it’s a hunting companion, hunt test dog, or family dog with solid obedience, we take pride in building obedient retrievers that are reliable, confident, and a pleasure to own.
